Title of the paper :
Human Compassion and Psychological Transformation in Times of Suffering An Existential Exploration of Leo Tolstoys The Death of Ivan Ilyich
Abstract:
The inquiry into the suffering of the human being has long been a subject of philosophical, literary and psychological studies. The Death of Ivan Ilyich is Leo Tolstoys exploration of the meaning of life, death, pain and compassion. It is a short story about Ivan Ilyich, a respected judge, who, on the verge of death, comes to understand that his life is devoid of meaning, as his own creation. This paper which employs existential philosophy and psychological concepts of suffering as a lens, explores how Ivan Ilyichs consciousness changes from a narcissistic materialism towards divine enlightenment. The study also investigates the role of empathy in studying the character of Gerasim, who is totally different from the bourgeois norms of coldness and insincerity. This study argues that suffering in Tolstoys works is not merely physical suffering but a tool to achieve something, a tool to an existential awakening, a tool to a moral rebirth. This study illustrates that through the application of theory within existential psychology and other disciplines, it is possible to show how true compassion can help to reduce suffering and restore human dignity when faced with inevitability.
