The Experiences of Jewish Americans and their Cultural Heritage in Cynthia Ozicks The Cannibal Galaxy
Abstract:
American novelist, short story writer, essayist, and scholar Cynthia Ozick aims to characterize the difficulty of being Jewish in modern day America. Ozick ventured into uncharted territory by investigating the earliest theological roots of Judaism. Cynthia Ozick has received great praise for her books and short tales that portray the experiences of Jewish Americans and for her enduring, complex female characters. She has won several honors for her writing, such as the PENMalamud Award, the PENNabokov Award, and the National Book Critics Circle Award. Topics covered in Ozicks work include the difficulty of maintaining ones Jewish identity in modern day America, the psychological effects of the Holocaust, ambition and envy, and the ethical dangers of idolatry. The story of Joseph Brill, a European schoolteacher who immigrates to the US to manage a tiny private school after surviving the Holocaust, is examined in the contemplative book The Cannibal Galaxy. The story explores Brills inner conflicts and setback
