Abstract:
The Thanippadal are considered golden treasures of Tamil literature. These poems belong to a genre composed in such a way that they are easily understood by both scholars and laypersons. The Thanippadal encompass various events and messages, often featuring kings, patrons, deities, poets and common people. Within these collections, the ethical principles conveyed by avvaiyar are particularly significant.K.Su. Pillais compilation of Thanippadal reflects the intellectual depth of Tamil scholars and the cultural prestige of their educational traditions, expressed through words that emerged from their reflective memory. In ancient society, these poems were largely transmitted orally. During the flourishing period of oral literature, prior to the arrival of Europeans, Thanippadal were preserved through inscriptions on stone, copper plates and palm-leaf manuscripts. However , these preservation efforts did not yield lasting results, as many were destroyed by natural calamities. The surviving works were later printed, though each edition of the Thannippadal corpus varies in the number of poems included. These variations can be observed across the published compilations available today. Due to the abundance of such editions, this study specifically focuses on the theme of Ethics as conveyed by Avvaiyar in K.Su.Pillais Thannippadal collections
