Title of the paper :
Nature as a Spiritual and Cultural Force in A River Sutra
Abstract:
This paper examines Gita Mehtas A River Sutra 1993 from an eco spiritual standpoint, highlighting the novels deep ecological awareness grounded in Indian religious traditions. It explores how Mehta blends postcolonial concerns with environmental themes, especially through her portrayal of the sacred bond between the natural world and the divine. At the center of this analysis is the Narmada River, symbolically described as the River Sutra, which functions as the connecting link between the main narrative and its six interrelated stories. Presented as a lasting source of Indian spirituality, the river attracts ascetics and spiritual seekers to its banks. Using critical textual analysis, the study brings out the rich socio cultural and spiritual meanings associated with the holy Narmada.
