Title of the paper :
Power Dynamics in Preeti Shenoy’s A Hundred Little Flames
Abstract:
Power dynamics relates to how power is distributed, exercised, and contested within relationships, organizations, and society. As a tool of power, language is not merely a communication tool it is a tool of the exercise and construction of power. In Pierre Bourdieu’s linguistic capital theory, language is a symbolic power that organizes social hierarchies and relations. For example, those who speak a valued language or dialect have access to social benefits and economic resources, and those who lack it are typically marginalized. For instance, the global supremacy of English has created a linguistic hierarchy that privileges native speakers and skilled speakers, typically at the expense of local languages and cultural diversity. It comes across overt forms and subtle ways, impacting individuals’ and groups’ interaction. Power conflicts are commonly reflected in literature employing familial relationships, workplace hierarchies, social norms, and political structures. Preeti Shenoy’s A Hundred Little Flames presents numerous aspects of power dynamics, specifically in family contexts, corporate scenarios, and generation changes.
