Abstract:
This paper presents a comparative analysis of the aesthetic representation of nature in Ruskin Bonds The Room on the Roof and R.K. Narayans Malgudi Days, two influential works of Indian English literature. Bonds narrative positions nature as a lyrical and transformative force, integral to the protagonist Rustys emotional and spiritual development. The Himalayan landscape its rains, forests, and silences functions as a site of introspection and liberation, reflecting Bonds romantic and individualistic aesthetic vision. On the Contrary, R.K. Narayans Malgudi Days offers an analysis of nature grounded in the social and cultural rhythms of the imaginary town. Natural elements such as the Sarayu River and agricultural fields operate within public life, shaping societies, livelihoods, and collective experiences. This comparative analysis underlines how Bond emphasizes inward perfection through closeness with nature, while R.K. Narayan highlights the natural and cultural intimacy of human existence. Together, their contradictory aesthetic significances illuminate two distinct approaches to nature within Indian literary modernism.
