Abstract:
Elizabeth Gilberts Eat, Pray, Love 2006 is a pivotal text in contemporary womens memoir writing, wherein, woman engages herself in an act of self assertion and voice reclamation. This paper, Claiming Voice A Feminist Exploration of Eat, Pray, Love One Womans Search For Everything by Elizabeth Gilbert, examines the memoir through a feminist lens to explore how Gilbert defines traditional notions of womanhood and dismantles patriarchal expectations of marriage, domesticity, and female self sacrifice. Throughout her journey across Italy, India, and Indonesia, Gilbert intertwines travel, spirituality and culinary pleasure and food, prayer, and love thus become symbols of freedom and healing. Gilbert uses memoir as a medium to claim her voice and redefine a sense of self’ to assert independence and identity in a sceptical world.
