A Critical Lens of Environmental Crisis, Displacement and Social Injustice in Na D Souzas Novel Dweepa
Abstract:
The proposed article critically engages with kannada novelist Na D Souzas seminal novel Dweepa to study the variety of effects the construction of a dam on the river Sharavathi has on the life property, family relations, profession habitat of residents of the village Hosamanehalli in the Malenadu region. By examining the environmental crisis, gendered dimensions of displacement and powerful commentary on social injustice, the narrative intertwines environmental degradation with the oppression of women. The crisis in the novel men made environmental disaster, stemming from the construction of the Linganamakki dam. The displacement in the novel is both physical and psychological, as the characters are uprooted from their land and traditions. It explores social injustice of a rural family who must connected with government corruption, the dehumanization of labors, and the dismantling of traditional, social structures in the name of progress.
