A CORRELATIONAL STUDY OF PARENTING STYLES AND EMOTIONAL COMPETENCE AMONG ADOLESCENTS
Abstract:
Parenting styles play a vital role in shaping adolescents emotional competence. Urban and rural adolescents face diverse social and emotional challenges. The present study aimed to explore the relationship between parenting styles and emotional competence among adolescents. To assess the parenting styles, Parental Authority Questionnaire Buri, 1991 and to assess the emotional competence, Emotional Competence Scale Sharma Bhardwaj, 1995 were used and it administered 60 adolescents. A purposive sampling was used and selected from various school of Nashik city. Pearsons correlation analysis shows a significant positive correlation found between authoritative parenting, permissive parenting with emotional competence, and also significant negative correlation found between authoritarian parenting and emotional competence. Multiple regression analysis found that the three parenting styles jointly significantly predicted emotional competence R² = 0.51, F3,56 = 19.3, p < .001. The study suggests that parenting style importance for emotional development. Schools and community programs can promote such understanding.
