Digital Democracy: Social Media and Political Participation
Abstract:
Purpose This study examines the influence of social media on political participation within the framework of digital democracy, focusing on how online platforms reshape civic engagement and democratic practices. Methodology A systematic review of peer-reviewed literature published is conducted, synthesizing theoretical and empirical studies on social media use, political participation, and democratic outcomes. Findings The review finds that social media lowers barriers to political participation by expanding access to political information, enhancing political expression, and increasing political efficacy, particularly among youth and marginalized groups. However, it also highlights significant challenges, including misinformation, political polarization, algorithmic bias, and digital inequality, which can undermine the quality of democratic engagement. Implications The study underscores the importance of institutional regulation, digital literacy, and transparent platform governance to strengthen democratic participation in the digital era. Originality,Value The article provides a balanced and up to date assessment of social medias dual role in shaping political participation, contributing to contemporary debates on digital democracy.
