Title of the paper :
POLYGLOTISM ON SOCIAL MEDIA: A STUDY OF CODE SWITCHING AND CULTURAL HYBRIDITY
Abstract:
The digital age has transformed the way people communicate, allowing for rich multilingual interactions in online environments. This study finds the practices of code switching and translanguaging among individuals who speak multiple languages, particularly on social media platforms. It highlights on how these practices are expressed in digital communication and the different ways they shape interactions. Code switching is becoming more common in digital communication, especially on popular platforms such as Instagram, Whats app, Ticktock, and Twitter. This trend highlights a changing way of communicating in a world that is becoming more multilingual and interconnected. The study investigates code switching in digital settings, looking at the factors that influence it, such as the social environment, the audience, and the type of platform being used. The concept of hybridity, introduced by Homi K. Bhabha, refers to the blending of cultural identities when individuals or groups interact with multiple cultures. This process creates a new space that challenges traditional notions of cultural or national purity. Hybridity is not just about mixing two cultures it involves a continuous negotiation of identity in spaces that exist between cultures. The findings reveal that code switching is shaped by social and psychological factors, with speakers often changing languages to better connect with their audience or to express their cultural identity.
