TRENDS AND CHALLENGES BEFORE FOODGRAIN MARKETING IN INDIA SINCE 2015 to 2025
Abstract:
Foodgrain marketing plays a pivotal role in India’s agricultural economy, ensuring food security, price stability, and income support to millions of farmers. Between 2015 and 2025, the Indian foodgrain marketing system has undergone significant transformations driven by policy reforms, digitalization, market integration, and evolving consumer demand. This research paper examines the structure, performance, and changes in foodgrain marketing in India during this decade. It analyzes major reforms such as eNAM, Minimum Support Price MSP revisions, procurement mechanisms, Public Distribution System PDS reforms, and the role of private sector participation. Using secondary data from government reports, academic literature, and policy documents, the study evaluates trends in production, procurement, pricing, storage, and distribution of major foodgrains. The paper also identifies key challenges including market inefficiencies, regional disparities, infrastructure gaps, and climate-related risks. The study concludes with policy suggestions for strengthening foodgrain marketing to ensure farmer welfare and national food security.
