Emotional Intelligence Among Adolescents: A Gender Perspective
Abstract:
Emotional intelligence EI is important for adolescents mental well being, social relationships, and academic performance. This study examined gender differences in emotional intelligence among adolescents. The sample consisted of 60 college going adolescents 30 males and 30 females aged 18 to 21 years, selected through random sampling from an urban college in Maharashtra. Emotional intelligence was measured using the Emotional Intelligence Inventory developed by Mangal and Mangal, which assesses four areas intrapersonal awareness, interpersonal awareness, intrapersonal management, and interpersonal management. Descriptive statistics mean and standard deviation and an independent samples t test were used for data analysis. The results showed that female adolescents scored significantly higher than male adolescents on all four dimensions of emotional intelligence at the .01 level of significance. These findings indicate clear gender differences in emotional intelligence and suggest the need for programs that support the development of emotional skills, especially among male adolescents.
