Evaluating Challenges in Paddy Farming and the Feasibility of Customized Drones for Sustainable Agriculture
Abstract:
Agriculture continues to be the backbone of Indian economy, with paddy cultivation forming the staple livelihood for millions of farmers, particularly in Kerala. However, farmers face multiple challenges, including high input costs, labour shortages, pest infestations, and inefficient crop monitoring. Emerging technologies such as agricultural drones offer opportunities to address these constraints by enhancing precision farming, reducing labour dependency, and improving productivity. This study aims to assess the constraints faced by local paddy farmers and explore the feasibility of designing a customized drone tailored to their needs. A sample of 20 local farmers from Kerala is surveyed to understand their farming practices, challenges, and attitudes toward adopting drone based solutions. The findings are expected to provide practical insights into how technology can be localized and made farmer friendly, contributing to sustainable agricultural development.
