Digital infrastructure in Indian schools A state wise analysis
Abstract:
Given the vast rising population, the importance of imparting education through digital platforms, and using ICT enabled devices as a part of curriculum became vital to increase the digital readiness among students to equip them for a productive future. Thus, the paper aims to analyze the availability of digital infrastructure namely functioning computers, internet connectivity, smart classrooms, digital libraries etc. in schools across the various states of India. The study is limited to the analysis of digital infrastructure of schools managed by the states in India to emphasize the importance of building a strong foundation and provide exposure in ICT and related tools across all economic classes. The study uses secondary data from the UDISE 2024 to 25 report to create a composite School Digital Infrastructure IndexSDII using Principal Component Analysis to analyse the state wise inequalities in the digital infrastructure of schools. This study would help in identifying those states which are relatively front runners, performers and aspirants by Hierarchical clustering analysis using Wards linkage method. This findings of the study shows that Tamil Nadu ranks first in the SDII, followed by Punjab and Kerala. Meghalaya has the least rank in the SDII. The states of southern and Western regions have relatively better digital infrastructure in schools than the other regions. The paper emphasizes not only the need to improve the digital infrastructure but also the need for sustained usage of the facilities.
