DIGITAL HEALTH INNOVATIONS AND THEIR IMPACT ON SOCIAL WELFARE
Abstract:
Digital health innovations telemedicine, AI diagnostics, wearable tech, and mHealth apps are reshaping healthcare and amplifying social welfare by democratizing access and optimizing resource allocation. In India, where 65% of the population resides in rural areas with limited medical infrastructure, these tools address critical disparities. The eSanjeevani platform, launched during the COVID19 pandemic, has delivered over 200 million consultations by 2025, enabling remote OPD services and reducing travel burdens for low income families, thus cutting healthcare costs by up to 40% in remote regions. The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission ABDM exemplifies integration, creating a unified health ID system linking electronic health records across public and private providers, fostering preventive care and reducing duplication. Wearables like those integrated with the Aarogya Setu app have empowered real time health monitoring, aiding early detection of non communicable diseases among underserved communities. AI tools, such as those in NITI Aayogs pilots, predict outbreaks with 90% accuracy, enhancing public health responses. However, challenges persist the digital divide affects 50% of rural Indians lacking internet access, data privacy breaches undermine trust, and biases in algorithms risk marginalizing tribal populations. This paper evaluates these innovations socioeconomic impacts through empirical data and case studies, arguing for policy reforms like subsidized devices, cybersecurity protocols, and inclusive ABDM expansion. By prioritizing equity, India can leverage digital health to advance SDGs, ensuring universal welfare and resilient health systems.
