Green Technologies and Sustainable Development: Opportunities and Emerging Environmental Challenges in India
Abstract:
Sustainable development has become a major global precedent in response to growing environmental challenges like resource depletion, climate change and degradation of the environment. In this situation, environmentally friendly green technologies play an important role in promoting sustainable economic growth worldwide. The present study examines the contribution made by green technologies in India towards sustainable development and also highlights the emerging environmental challenges like e waste accumulation associated with its expansion. The study mainly focuses on two major elements of green technological development that is the growth and expansion of the use of renewable energy resources and of digital technologies in India. At the same time, it considered the increasing issues related to electronic waste generation resulting from the rapid adoption of electronic and digital devices. The paper is entirely based on secondary data that was collected from various sources, viz., the Renewable Energy Statistics 2024 to 2025 published under the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India digital data associated with the study was obtained from the World Bank database, and the e-waste related data was obtained from the Open Government Data Platform of India. The findings indicate that India has made significant progress in expanding renewable energy capacity and digital connectivity, which contribute positively to sustainable development. However, the rising generation of electronic waste poses new environmental challenges that require effective management strategies. The study highlights the importance of balancing technological advancement with responsible environmental management in order to achieve long-term sustainable development.
