Title of the paper :
A Self Learning Approach to Medical English: The Role of Cognitive Theory
Abstract:
This paper focuses on helping medical students improve their English skills through a self learning approach supported by ideas from cognitive theory. English plays an important role in medical education and professional practice. Medical students need English to understand textbooks, attend lectures, write exams, and communicate with patients and healthcare professionals. However, many students face difficulties in using English confidently, especially in speaking and writing. The study explains that classroom learning alone is not enough to develop strong language skills. Students need to take responsibility for their own learning. A self learning approach allows students to practice English regularly at their own pace. Simple activities such as reading medical texts, listening to lectures, speaking with peers, and writing notes help students improve gradually. The paper also highlights the importance of cognitive theory in language learning. According to this theory, students learn effectively by observing others, following good examples, and building confidence in their abilities. Watching videos, listening to expert speakers, and participating in group discussions provide opportunities for learning through observation and modelling. These experiences help students develop self confidence and reduce fear of making mistakes. Technology plays a supportive role by offering platforms for interactive and collaborative learning. It allows students to engage with different learning materials and connect with peers, which improves both understanding and communication skills. The paper concludes that combining self learning with cognitive strategies helps medical students become independent and confident learners. This approach not only improves their English proficiency but also prepares them for effective communication in their medical careers. Continuous practice, positive attitude, and self belief are essential for successful language learning.
