Title of the paper :
Negotiating Trust Across Media: Truth and Representation in the Film and Television Adaptations of Umberto Ecos The Name of the Rose
Abstract:
Umberto Ecos The Name of the Rose explores the complex relationship between truth, authority, and trust through a medieval mystery centered on knowledge, interpretation, and power. Its adaptation into the 1986 film and the 2019 television series extends these concerns into visual media, where cinematic and televisual techniques influence the audiences understanding of truth and credibility. This paper examines how the novel’s central themes are represented and reinterpreted across these two screen adaptations, with particular attention to the portrayal of authority, visual storytelling, and narrative perspective. It argues that while the film and television series remain rooted in Ecos narrative, each medium negotiates trust differently through its distinctive representational strategies and storytelling techniques. By exploring the transformation of the novel into visual narratives, the paper highlights how adaptations reshape the experience of truth and representation while reflecting the changing expectations of contemporary audiences and media culture.
