Title of the paper :
Embodied Marginalities: An Intersectional Study of Caste and Gender in Meena Alexanders Nampally Road
Abstract:
According to Encyclopedia Britannica, intersectionality refers to an intellectual framework for understanding how various aspects of individual identity including race, gender, social class, and sexuality interact to create unique experiences of privilege or oppression. Meena Alexanders Nampally Road 1991 is a socio-political novel that explores multiple themes through the subjective perspective of its narrator and protagonist, Mira. The novel unravels the complexities of social injustice by foregrounding Miras ideological, feminist, and personal conflicts alongside the experiences of other female characters, thereby illuminating the intersecting structures of oppression that shape their lives. This paper examines the struggles of the female characters in Nampally Road, arguing that their experiences are profoundly gendered and intricately intertwined with the oppressive structures of caste and power politics. Drawing on the theoretical framework of intersectionality, the study explores how these overlapping systems of oppression shape their identities, agency, and lived realities.
