A Material Ecocritical Study in Easterine Kires When the River Sleeps
Abstract:
Easterine Kires When the River Sleeps 2014 centres the protagonist, Vilie, who lives as a forest hunter for forty years. His village people believed that the heart stone in the river had a power, that is, one who picks the heart stone will have the wealth in their lifetime. Vilie tries to take the stone from the sleeping river. The protagonist faces obstacles in his journey both from the natural world and from the unreal world. From the themes of environmental restraints, unreal elements that connect the Nagaland culture with the realities of people, that reflects their customs, rituals and belief systems. The people of Nagaland emphasize respect for the land and the unnatural forces which guide and influence their ideas in their lives. They have the separate unique rituals and the superstitions that are associated with the mythical and the supernatural elements. The landscapes in the Easterine Kires When the River Sleeps 2014 are not a passive element but an active participant along with the major characters in the work. The narratives of the landscapes, like rivers, forests or markets, are rooted in the sustainable relationship of the natural environment. The unreal and natural elements are the sacred version of the Naga culture.
