Title of the paper :
Challenges and Remedies in Legal Writing: An ESP Based Approach
Abstract:
Legal writing is a critical component of legal education and professional practice because law students have to communicate legal concepts clearly, accurately, and precisely. But a lot of students struggle with writing legal arguments, case analyses, assignments, and other legal documents. These challenges may be related to grammar, sentence structure, legal vocabulary, coherence, organization and the use of appropriate formal legal language. This paper presents the main obstacles to law students acquisition of effective legal writing skills from an English for Specific Purposes ESP perspective. It also discusses practical solutions to overcome such difficulties and to enhance students writing in accordance with the particular needs of the legal domain. This paper suggests that legal writing should be considered not just a general English skill, but a specialised form of communication, which is shaped by legal discourse and conventions. An ESP approach can assist in identifying the specific needs of learners and in delivering focused instruction, writing practice, feedback, and task based activities to enhance the legal writing competence of learners.
