Title of the paper :
Theoretical Foundations of Innovation in English Language Teaching Methods
Abstract:
This paper describes and critically evaluates this literature in English language education. Close attention is paid to the structure and main themes ideas of the literature and the validity of opposing theoretical standpoints. A large body of literature on innovation has developed within fields such as educational research, development studies, strategic planning and mass communication. Waters, 2009, issuing a bibliographic survey of literature on innovations, indicates as many as fifty seven conceptual themes which have been used in research papers. By way of illustration, sets innovations in a general context as an idea, practice or object that is perceived as new by an individual or other unit of adoption. He further distinguishes between diffusion, dissemination, adoption and acceptance. identifies five contextual dimensions i.e., social structural, socio political, economic, temporal and technological. describes three discursive aspects of development i.e., epistemic, rhetorical and requisite. These ideas are rarely dealt with in an integrated manner. Dividing the literature thematically would seem to provide a useful overview of the separate treatments of the issues involved and, at the same time, avoid the limitation of having to be comprehensive. Innovation in English language education has been put and is continuing to be put to new and varied uses, now in numerous decision areas. A literature has emerged within English language education which has attempted to ally this multiplying rate of change to an understanding of innovation in theory and practice. Much of it is pre cursored by an awareness that research into innovation in practice has often left theory far behind.
