Title of the paper :
Concept of Freedom in Modern Indian Thought with Special Reference to Mahatma Gandhi
Abstract:
The contemporary Indian thinkers believe that the roots of philosophical thinking lies in the considerations that are existential and assert that life means living in the midst of life situations and in spite of them. They make philosophy close to life and want to tackle the ultimate problems of life and they viewed concept of freedom as the highest ideal of life. Modern Indian thinkers held that man is free both existentially and metaphysically and this view of freedom is shared by almost all modern Indian philosophers. Tagore, Sri Aurobindo, Dr.S.Radhakrishnan, Mahatma Gandhi etc can be cited as best examples in this regard. Here in this paper, I would like to focus the concept of freedom in Gandhian thought. For Gandhi, freedom and preservation of individual integrity were of supreme consideration. He analyzed freedom from the moral, spiritual, social, political and economic perspectives. His concept of freedom is a comprehensive and multifaceted idea that includes various aspects of individual and collective life. It encompasses more than just individual or national freedom and he believed that genuine freedom results in self denial for the sake of society.
