Title of the paper :
Women, Religion and Marginality in Sara Aboobackers novel Breaking Ties
Abstract:
Sara Aboobacker was one of the well-known south Indian writers and novelists who was successful in exposing the oppressive and unfair laws imposed on women by the religion. She also attacks religious dogma in an overtly feminist stance. Her novels are simple and portray the evils of the religious and social superstitious beliefs, the pain and suffering of Muslim women, the tradition of talaq, and their unbearable life after having children in her writings. Her narratives mostly focus on the prejudice and oppression that Muslim women experience in the coastal Kerala and Karnataka regions as well as throw light on the patriarchal power and male chauvinism existing in the society. Sara challenges such patriarchal supremacy by highlighting her strong female characters who negotiate with all their possible identities to remain steadfast in their own thoughts and deeds. This paper will critically analyse how the novel Breaking Ties is an example of a feminist text which illustrates the marginalised Muslim women and how patriarchal system, misinterpretation religious laws and gender inequality exploited and subjugated the life of a young innocent girl Nadira, the heroine of the novel Breaking Ties.
