Tension between pain and pleasure in Gayl Joness Evas Man
Abstract:
Gayl Jones is an American novelist, poet and playwright known for her innovative and provocative works that explore the complexities of African American life. Evas Man, second novel of Gayl Jones 1976 examines the complex relationships between men and women. The novel is a psychological portrait of a woman unable to love for fear of pain. Evas man is deepened exploration of the womans inner life, of the pressures, the cruelties, the imposed expectations. Jones is best known for her novels, in which she creates worlds where madness, violence and sexuality collide, often with destructive results for women. Evas silence and unwillingness to explain her is partially a result of trauma. Evas pain and pleasure is not only her own, she is haunted by pain that is both hers and others. Imprisoned for the murder of her lover, Eva median Canada weaves together memory and fantasy to reveal a life for mended by the brutality of sexual abuse and emotional silence. Eva reveals her own pain and pleasure through fragmented memories. Eva as a character traumatized by years of severe sexual abuse. Gayl Jones novel generally deals with the dark, violent and gothic situations of human life with the help of her characters. Her works are a source of using ones pain into strength. Jones teaches us how we use our pain shows how strong we are and we are ready to face any problem. The novel explores the emotional pain and pleasure that can arise in relationship. Evas relationships with men are marked by a complex interplay between pain and pleasure.
