Oil: A Study of Anthropocene through Theatrical Lens
Abstract:
This research paper explores the play Oil by Ella Hickson, examining its thematic exploration of anthropocene and its relationship with oil. Anthropocene is a concept that highlights the significant impact of human activities on Earths ecosystems and provides a framework to analyse the plays portrayal of human dependency on oil, environmental consequences, socioeconomic disparities, and power dynamics. Through a detailed analysis, this paper seeks to understand how Oil reflects the realities and consequences of oil extraction and consumption in anthropocene era. By engaging with the plays themes, audiences can gain insights into the complex and urgent challenges posed by the intersection of humans, oil, and anthropocene. The play delves into the multifaceted relationship between humans and oil. The research paper aims to explore the themes and motifs present in Oil, examining how the play reflects the realities and consequences of oil extraction and consumption in anthropocene era. Throughout the play, Hickson explores imperialism, environmentalism, and the human cost of progress. The characters are complex and well drawn, and their struggles feel real and relatable. The play is also beautifully written, with poetic language and a deep sense of empathy for its characters.
