Title of the paper :
Strong and Resilient Women in the Retelling of the Indian Mythology by Kavita Kane and Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni
Abstract:
Indian epics and myths have always influenced the masses not only in India, but the whole continent. The men of these epics have been acclaimed for their vigor and merit since the time immemorial, whereas the women in these texts have on some occasions been held on the pedestals of honor and on the others have been confined to perform the gender specific roles. Modern revisionist writers like Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni, Kavita Kane, and Koral Das Gupta etc. have revisited the lives of such mythological women who were either objectified, were deemed as mere extensions of the men of their lives, or were even deprived of making their own choices, and were socially excluded. The present study aims to highlight the resistance and resilience of such mythological women depicted in the retellings of Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni and Kavita Kane, who resisted to be repressed and became resilient to reclaim their individual identities as strong and resilient women.
