Title of the paper :
Liminal Spaces: Navigating Gendered Vulnerability in Gopinath Mohantys Paraja
Abstract:
Paraja by Gopinath Mohanty is a seminal work in Indian Tribal Writing, offering a poignant portrayal of the existential struggles encountered by the Paraja tribes of the Koraput region in Odisha. The study analyses gender marginalisation and exploitation through the character Jili, a young woman from the indigenous Paraja tribe. The novel underscores the heightened vulnerability of tribal women caught in the liminal space between eroding traditional norms and the predatory forces of modern world thrust into a precarious existence where her labour is exploited and her body becomes a commodity. The objective of the study is to decipher the systemic nature of gendered oppression faced by marginalised women in a marginalised community. The implications of the study exemplify the need for new developmental policies that facilitate inclusivity and harmony.
