Name of Author :
Dr. S.S. Uma Sundara Sood
Title of the paper :
Tracing Ecological Consciousness through Literature from Sacred Groves to Cyber Forests with Reference to Colleen McCullough
Abstract:
This paper investigates the progression of ecological awareness in literature, from ancient veneration for nature depicted in sacred texts to contemporary digital narratives that act in response to environmental crises. Through the lens of ecocriticism, the study highlights how literary landscapes have reflected changing human-nature relationships over time. Special spotlight is given to the works of Colleen McCullough, whose novels delicately yet powerfully embed ecological concerns within historical and cultural contexts. Her depiction of the Australian landscape, environmental degradation and the feminine connection to nature aligns with modern ecofeminist thought. By bridging ancient literary traditions with digitalage interpretations, the paper traces a continuum that underscores literatures role in fostering environmental awareness. The study aims to demonstrate that literature, regardless of era or medium, remains a vital force in shaping ecological ethics and inspiring sustainable thinking. McCullough’s contributions exemplify how fiction can cultivate environmental sensibilities across generations.
