Title of the paper :
Ecocritical Approaches to Environmental Responsibility in the Works of Stephen Alter and Vandana Shiva
Abstract:
This paper dives into the field of Ecocriticism by looking at how two prominent Indian figures Stephen Alter and Vandana Shiva approach the environment through their writings. Ecocriticism, as an interdisciplinary approach, examines the relationship between literature and the natural environment through the analysis of narratives that shape ecological consciousness. Alters nature driven encourage readers to form deep emotional connections with the natural world, his works celebrate biodiversity, landscape and the value of nature without overt political messaging, while Shivas powerful activist writings blends ecofeminism, environmental activism, and critiques of globalization and promoting local values over global popular beliefs, she challenges systems that harm nature, marginalized communities and issues and stereotypes related to gender oppression. This study shows how their distinct voices, one rooted in storytelling and the other in activism, come together to influence how we think about environmental responsibility in India. This paper ultimately argues for the necessity of integrating literary perspectives with active participation through environmental activism in the fight against the ecological crisis.
