Title of the paper :
The Representation of Women in Amitav Ghoshs Sea of Poppies
Abstract:
Amitav Ghosh is one of the vibrant writers of Indian English literature. He examines the Indian pulse in great detail during the colonial era. As a social thinker and storyteller, he speaks for what our culture hasnt said for decades. Amitav Ghosh has made a name for himself as a writer with unique skills who blends literary flair with an unorthodox use of logic. The best illustration of this is found in his 2008 Man Booker Prize finalist novel Sea of Poppies. He has tried to demonstrate in Sea of Poppies how women can be empowered, educated, and selfreliant so that they might eventually govern themselves in India. His depiction of women folk is accurate in all facets of postcolonial research. The story of colonized India is retold in this book, which might be interpreted as a postcolonial work. In the current world, which is picky and expanding quickly, Ghosh has taken a step back in time and heard the voice of the voiceless. Why is this man so preoccupied with the past He predicts the future by foretelling the past because he cares deeply about the wellbeing of society. Our societys current situation will relive the past under the pretense of some enticing government initiatives put in place by the alleged wellwishers of our neighboring nations. Hence, this is the message that Ghosh wishes to convey through his social novel Sea of Poppies.
