Title of the paper :
An Exploration of Ecofeminist Perspectives in Anton Chekhovs The Cherry Orchard
Abstract:
This paper explores Anton Chekhovs The Cherry Orchard through the lens of ecofeminism, a critical theory of connections between the oppression of women and the degradation of nature. Ecofeminism reveals how both women and the environment are marginalized, silenced, and exploited. In Chekhovs play, The Cherry Orchard stands as a powerful symbol of beauty, a symbol of nature, memory, and femininity. However, the capitalist mentality that puts financial gain before ecological and sentimental value is reflected in its intentional destruction for development motivated by profit. Madame Ranevskaya and other female characters demonstrate a strong bond with the orchard, but they have a lack of ability to maintain it, underscoring the disregard for womens voices and their ties to the natural world. The Cherry Orchard offers a potent critique of societal change, environmental degradation, and genderbased disempowerment in contemporary society, revealing a profound ecological and feminist consciousness through this ecofeminist interpretation.
