Title of the paper :
From Isolation to Extremism: Tracing Online Radicalization in Nicolas Padamsees England Is Mine
Abstract:
This paper explores the theme of online radicalization in Nicolas Padamsees novel England Is Mine. Set in contemporary Britain, the novel follows the journey of a teenage boy who gradually becomes drawn into extremist ideologies. It powerfully illustrates how isolation, identity confusion, and unfiltered access to the internet can make vulnerable individuals susceptible to radical thinking. The aim of this study is to understand how Padamsee portrays the process of online radicalization through fiction. It examines the influence of online platforms in shaping the thoughts and behaviours of disconnected youth. The novel suggests that radicalization is not sudden but develops through subtle exposure to extremist ideas, often disguised within everyday digital content. This paper uses a qualitative literary analysis approach, focusing on close reading of the text to trace key themes, character development, and narrative strategies. It also draws insights from media studies and psychology to deepen the analysis of how the digital world can foster extremism. Special attention is given to the concept of echo chambers, where social media and online forums isolate users within a narrow set of views, reinforcing harmful beliefs. The study concludes that England Is Mine is both a personal and political narrative. Padamsees work acts as a cautionary tale, highlighting the mental and emotional toll of digital radicalization. The novel calls for increased awareness, social support, and critical engagement with digital culture to protect vulnerable youth from ideological harm.
