Eco Critical Concerns in Dystopian Literature A Study of Select Dystopian Novels
Abstract:
The constantly rising sea levels and global warming have caused a major threat to the humanity. The global challenge of ecological preservation is being represented in the present generation of speculative dystopian fiction to warn humans about the impending catastrophe. Dystopian texts engage in an eco-critical discourse with the concerns of environmental crisis and the agents of climate change. the eco critical re evaluation of recent trends within the dystopian generation has resulted in the emergence of eco dystopian novels. Ecological devastation becomes a major part of the narratives of Anthropocene and climate change. Fluctuations in solar radiation have caused the ice caps to melt and the oceans to rise. Nature is on rampage and humans are vulnerable to climatic disasters. The veneer of civilization could slip away easily due to the insensitive attitude of humans towards mother earth. This research paper focuses on the present ecological crises that are portrayed in the dystopian fiction, and cautions the society to preserve the natural ecosystem for the harmonious living. Ecological resources are becoming scarce and it is vital to take it into consideration for the welfare of the world and all the living creatures that depend upon them, for their survival. Dystopian literature intends to depict some of the probing existing environmental issues in its narrative which, in turn create awareness among the people to take necessary actions or that might lead into an unimaginable apocalyptic future as portrayed in the fictions of Dystopia. The ecological issues of Climate change, global warming, pollution, abuse of technology, deforestation, loss of biodiversity, extinction of species, depletion of natural resources, food and water Scarcity and many issues are been faced by the current world.
