Title of the paper :
The Oceans Embrace: A Blue Ecocritical Inquiry into Joe D Cruzs Ocean Rimmed World
Abstract:
Joe D Cruz is a Tamil novelist and a renowned chronicler of coastal life. His works poignantly record the harsh realities that characterize the lives of the fishermen who depend on the sea for their survival. His celebrated novel Ocean Rimmed World is a gripping exploration of the relentless struggles of a coastal community. In the novel the ocean is not merely a setting but a central, dynamic force that dictates the lives of the characters. It is depicted as both a source of livelihood and as a predatory entity that devours at times. The study presents the fishing communitys deep indigenous knowledge of the oceans ebbs and flows, its non- human inhabitants, and their ingrained ecological ethics. It also critiques the erosion of the traditional way of life due to the intrusion of commercial fishing practices. However, the community has cultivated a harmonious coexistence with its marine life, one that is rooted in great reverence and a symbiotic relationship. Applying a blue ecocritical framework, the paper analyses the novels representation of the oceans profound and ambivalent influence on the Parathavar community, by moving beyond a human centric world view.
