Title of the paper :
A Bruneian Analysis of Joyce Carol Oates Curly Red
Abstract:
This paper offers a Brunerian reading of Joyce Carol Oates short story Curly Red, focusing on how narrative functions as a therapeutic medium. Drawing on Jerome Bruners theory of narrative as a mode of psychological understanding, the analysis explores how readers internalize values, emotions, and self awareness through literary storytelling. The protagonist, Lili Rose, exemplifies a raw honesty that aligns with Bruners view of narrative identity. Oates evocative style, particularly her vivid descriptions of landscape and setting including rivers and changing seasons enrich the psychological texture of the narrative. These natural elements are not mere backdrops but play a symbolic role in reflecting the protagonists internal transformation. Set within the broader conference theme of evolving literary landscapes from the ancient to the digital era, this study positions Curly Red as a significant narrative where place, voice, and emotion coalesce to highlight the therapeutic power of storytelling in contemporary literature.
