Title of the paper :
A Critical Recall on Feminist Retellings in Kavita Kanes Ahalyas Awakening and Lankas Princess
Abstract:
Kavita Kane is an Indian writer. She has worked as a journalist for over two decades. Her novels are retellings of Indian mythologies from the perspective of women. Ahalyas Awakening highlights Ahalyas blameless life and how her life contorts to the illusions of the patriarchal society. Her ambitions are inhibited by her feminine responsibilities. She is torn between her passion for education and her commitment to being an ideal housewife. Lankas Princess traces the life of Surpanaka, a woman who is belittled because of her gender. Her feminine powers are suppressed by her misogynistic brothers. Her ideal life is thwarted by her fate of being a woman in a mans world. Ahalya and Surpanaka reflect the lives of modern women, who are punished by the patriarchy for voicing their opinion. This research paper analyses the unique narratology of female retellings used by Kavita Kané to exhibit the dilemma of women trapped in patriarchal societies in Ahalyas Awakening and Lankas Princess.
