Ethical and Societal Implications of Immersive Learning: Navigating the Implementation of VR and AR in Education
Abstract:
Virtual Reality VR and Augmented Reality AR are transforming education through immersive and interactive experiences that improve engagement, retention, and understanding of complex concepts. Despite these advantages, the implementation of immersive technologies presents ethical and societal challenges, including concerns around data privacy, emotional and psychological impact, accessibility, and content ethics. In this paper with a sample size of 35 respondents, critically examines the impact of immersive learning on student engagement, collaboration, and psychological wellbeing. The challenges, drawing upon the empirical research and the theoretical frameworks. It proposes actionable strategies and ethical guidelines to ensure responsible integration of VR and AR in education, with the aim of maximizing benefits while safeguarding the rights and wellbeing of learners. By synthesizing existing research and considering the evolving technological landscape, this paper offers recommendations for developing ethical guidelines and strategies for responsible VR and AR integration among the students, ultimately seeking to maximize their educational potential while safeguarding the wellbeing and rights of all learners.
