Storytelling for the Digital Generation: Social Issues in Chetan Bhagats Five Point Someone
Abstract:
Digital age is the revolutionary change in every field in the modernization. Literary culture is also having benefits of these dynamics with new form and style. Chetan Bhagats Five Point Someone highlights the Indian education system and social issues, especially anxieties of Indian youth, prestige of IIT, parental over expectations, pressure of examination and academic performance, ragging and youths struggle to cope with the system. The novel addressed these social issues with a traditional form of a book but the digital tools made it reach out to the digital generations. It is a significant shift of todays literary culture. Bhagats simple but touchy language, youth oriented issues, and social concerns made him popular in the generation of the internet, social media, YouTube and digital storytelling. The novels movie adaptation, titled, 3 Idiots created a thunderstorm in the minds of Indian youth and parents. Online reviews, ebooks, and discussions about Chetan Bhagat and the novel on digital platforms reflect the transformation of reading practices in contemporary India. Bhagats online videos, interviews made clear understanding about the novel in Indian youth. This paper examines how Five Point Someone highlights the different social issues through the characters and made sensation among the youth. The novel not only centers social issues relevant to students, youth and the Indian society but also exemplifies the changing dynamics of literary production and consumption in the digital age. Thus, the novel becomes a connection between traditional book form and the new digital readership, offering insights and new visions into how literature adapts to latest technology to keep promoting its existence and new identity.
