Liberal Arts (Music) in the Digital Age
Abstract:
Music is an integral part of human culture which serves as a medium for emotional communication and expression. Liberal Arts encompasses academic disciplines like humanities, social sciences, arts and so on. Under the Arts, Music has several components which align with the domain of liberal arts. Practice of music fosters intellectual and creative capacities of an individual. There is a great influence of the technological advancements in the field of music which motivates dynamic pedagogical approaches. The digital age has transformed the music industry to a large extent. Creation, distribution and experience of music is redefined. There is a shift in the way music is assessed with digital audio and video formats coming into vogue. Virtual platforms for exhibiting the art form has contributed towards increase in the availability of artists through online presence thereby improving networking and engagement with the art community. This has also facilitated better avenues for the artists for selfexpression and connectivity with the connoisseurs and music lovers. While all of this seems good, digitalization of music brings its own challenges. The preservation of musical integrity and adherence to the traditional way of learning music is a challenge with the growing application of technology in music.
